International Indian Treaty Council (IITC)
The International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) was founded in 1974. It is an organization that works for the sovereignty, the environmental justice and the self-determination of Indigenous Peoples as well as for the recognition and protection of their human rights, their treaties, their traditional cultures et their sacred lands. On July 25th, 2011, IITC became the first Indigenous organization to have its consultative status reclassified from "Special" to "General" by the UN Economic and Social Council. This upgrade was made in recognition of IITC's long-standing and wide-ranging participation in many areas and branches of the United Nations system representing the rights, concerns and struggles of Indigenous Peoples.
